Target Audience: Interpreters, Social Workers, Communication Support Staff, Teachers and Deaf individuals.
Workshop Overview: This course will introduce the fundamental concept of the Americans with Disabilities Act and discuss all 5 titles within the law, with a tailored focus on public accommodation and access to Government services. The seminar will serve as a basic introduction on how the law protects the rights of individuals with disabilities, how the law categorizes such protection and how the law is applicable to sign language interpreters. Within each title, a special focus will be upon the rights of Deaf and hard of hearing individuals and how different federal agencies focus on upholding the ADA. This presentation will also briefly discuss the recent amendments to the law.
Christopher Tester, CDI
is an American and British Sign Language interpreter and
disability inclusion consultant. He is certified by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and holds Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI). He has eight years of professional experience as a former manager / trainer at Sorenson communications and as a special projects coordinator and investigator at the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights. A seasoned presenter, he specializes in workshop and seminar facilitation on topics (not limited to) disability rights and laws, Deaf and hard of hearing awareness, and American Sign Language and interpreting. He has interpreted for several off and on Broadway shows, International events & conferences, regional RID conference, Conference of Interpreter Trainers and some community interpreting. He currently serves as President of the New York City Metro chapter of Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Chris received his Bachelor’s degree at the College of the Holy Cross and his Professional Certificate from the Interpreter Education Program at LaGuardia Community College. He resides in Manhattan.

This General Studies program is offered for 0.4 CEU’s.
