Long Island Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf
What is it?
Mentor Match (M&Ms) is LIRID’s mentorship program.  The goal is to
provide a variety of wants and needs in order to enhance the professional
development for each interpreter.  There are interpreters who need to
prepare for the RID national certification test: written and/or
performance.  There are those who want to observe different areas of the
field.  There are others who need to vent and ask questions regarding
interpreting situations and ethics.  There are those who want to know what
a job will look like and require before accepting it.  Every working
interpreter needs constant support and feedback for their skills and for our
profession to grow.  And sometimes we all just want and need a hug and
some chocolate!

Who are we looking for?
YOU!  Every interpreter can benefit from working with other interpreters in
efforts to better one’s skill.

What does it look like?
The mentorship committee utilizes a questionnaire designed for
interpreters, the mentors and mentees, to make a match.  Skills, locations,
goals and experience are all taken into account.  Once the M&Ms are
established, the mentee and mentor will be introduced and together they
will figure out what will work best for them (ie: dialoging about different
scenarios, meeting and working on videotapes, observing each other on the
job, etc.).  The exact procedure will be decided between the M&Ms, with
some guidance from the mentorship committee.

How can I join?
It’s simple.  There is a questionnaire that each mentor and mentee must
complete.  E-mail the committee to request the questionnaire:
mentorship@lirid.org.   Once you have filled it out, you can email or mail it
to LIRID’s PO Box.
