Workshop Overview: This workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to
further develop ethical thinking and decision-making skills. Through lectures, guided
discussions and role-play scenarios, participants will analyze the ethical role of
interpreters in various common work settings including team interpreting, how the RID
Code of Professional Conduct should affect interpreters’ decision-making and how to
respond to conflicts with team members or consumers.

Target Audience: Working interpreters and interpreting students.

Sallie Bruno has been an adjunct member of the Suffolk County Community College faculty
teaching American Sign Language and interpreting for more than 25 years.
She served four terms representing Region One for the educational interpreting special interest group.  Sallie was asked to join the New York State Education Department’s grant for training educational interpreters as the coordinator for Nassau and Suffolk Counties. She and Gary Garafola wrote the ethics training module used for grant workshops throughout the state. All of the state regional coordinators were trained in Educational Interpreters Performance Assessment based evaluation. She has also trained with Betty Colonomos in the Integrated Process Model and Vgotskiany Based Process Mediation. Sallie continues to teach and mentor.

Patrice Palma Blanco, BA, NIC, works as a freelance interpreter. Patrice is currently
the secretary for LIRID as well as co-chair for the Professional Development Committee.
Prior to this, Patrice was a Teacher for the Deaf and an Elementary School Teacher in
Wisconsin.
